Today's Words That Work: Skinflint
Skinflint (SKIN-flint) is a person who is excessively stingy or cautious with money. The word dates back to the 17th century, when people commonly used flint to start a fire. A skinflint was someone who would keep breaking (skinning) a piece of flint into smaller and smaller pieces in order to avoid spending a penny to buy a new one.
Example (as used by Richard Russo in Bridge of Sighs): "It's a standing joke in town that I'm a skinflint who routinely loses his wallet in his deep pockets."
